biography
Alberto Sughi was an Italian painter born in Cesena in 1928 and died in Bologna in 2012. A self-taught artist, he began his career shortly after World War II, collaborating with Giovanni Cappelli and Luciano Caldari to form the so-called Scuola Cesenate. His artistic research focused on existential realism, with a strong interest in analyzing contemporary society and the existential condition of man in large cities. Among his most notable series are "Il quotidiano nella città" (Everyday Life in the City), "La Cena" (The Dinner), "Immaginazione e memoria della famiglia" (Imagination and Memory of the Family), "Il teatro d'Italia" (The Theater of Italy), "La sera" (The Evening), and "Notturno" (Nocturne). Sughi rejected the ideological constraints of the Communist Party, choosing a more introspective and personal artistic path that depicted social malaise through solitary figures and urban peripheral settings. He exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale, where he served as president in 1993, and joined the National Academy of San Luca in 1997. In 2003, he created a cycle inspired by Dante Alighieri, exhibited at Palazzo Firenze and the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro among others. In 2014, his posthumous collection of reflections titled "Il Mio Lavoro di Pittore" (My Work as a Painter) was published.
