biography

Chanel was founded in 1910 by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in Paris, where she revolutionized women’s fashion by rejecting the restrictive styles of the late 19th century. Starting with a millinery shop, she quickly expanded into clothing that emphasized comfort, simplicity, and elegance. Her use of jersey fabric—previously reserved for men’s underwear—marked a turning point, as did iconic creations like the Chanel No. 5 perfume (1921) and the little black dress. Chanel’s designs liberated women from corsets and introduced a modern, sporty aesthetic that reshaped global fashion.

After Coco Chanel’s death in 1971, the house went through a quieter period before being revitalized in 1983 under Karl Lagerfeld, who reinterpreted the brand’s heritage with bold creativity. He preserved signature elements like tweed suits, quilted handbags, and interlocking Cs while injecting contemporary flair. Today, Chanel remains one of the most influential luxury brands in the world, synonymous with timeless sophistication, innovation, and exclusivity, continuing to shape trends across fashion, beauty, and culture.
