biography
Sergio Ceccotti, born in Rome on May 7, 1935, is a renowned Italian painter and printmaker active mainly between Rome and Paris. He trained between 1956 and 1957 at the Internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst in Salzburg under Oskar Kokoschka for painting and Slavi Soucek for lithography, and attended drawing courses at the French Academy in Rome, Villa Medici, from 1956 to 1961. His first solo exhibition was held in 1960 at the L’Albatro gallery in Rome.
His style evolved from influences of Cubism, Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical painting, and 1920s German art, towards a more complex and dynamic narrative inspired by film noir, photography, advertising, and comics, creating a metaphysical and mysterious vision of everyday life. Defined as a “détective de la quotidienneté” and “artisan de l'énigme,” Ceccotti is considered a master of contemporary Italian figuration, blending metaphysical suggestions with noir atmospheres and comic references.
He has exhibited in numerous Italian and international cities, participating in major events such as the Rome Quadriennale (1986, 1999) and the Venice Biennale (2011, Lazio section). His works are held in prestigious public collections and museums, including the Modern Religious Art Collection of the Vatican Museums, the Staatliches Lindenau Museum in Altenburg, and the municipal modern art galleries of Bologna and Arezzo.
