biography
Nedda Guidi (Gubbio, March 22, 1927 – Rome, April 13, 2015) was one of the most important Italian sculptors and ceramists of the 20th century, internationally recognized for her innovation in contemporary ceramics. After graduating in philosophy from the University of Urbino, she dedicated herself to art, beginning with painting and drawing before focusing on ceramic sculpture. In the 1950s and 1960s, she created the renowned 'Fogli' and 'Moduli' series—thin terracotta sheets and geometric volumes—exhibited in major galleries and exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Guidi was a pioneering figure in the feminist art scene: in 1976, she founded the Beato Angelico Cooperative, the first Roman space dedicated to women artists. Her works have been featured in numerous Biennials, including those in Gubbio, Savona, and Faenza, as well as international exhibitions in Korea, Japan, Turkey, and the United States. In 2013, the Ceramics Museum of Montelupo Fiorentino dedicated a retrospective to her, and in 2024, the Venice Biennale honored her with an exhibition in the Central Pavilion. Her artistic research evolved over the years towards minimalist and Arte Povera poetics, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Italian contemporary art.
