biography
Maurizio Mochetti is an Italian artist born in 1940 in Rome, where he currently lives and works. He began his artistic career in 1968 with his first solo exhibition at the La Salita Gallery in Rome, marking the start of an innovative path that made him one of the pioneers in Italy in using light as a plastic and spatial element in his works. A graduate of the Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Mochetti's artistic research focuses on the physicality of light, initially working with photons and later with lasers to explore and visualize invisible space beyond normal light perception.
Throughout his career, he has received important awards, including the Pascali Prize in Polignano a Mare and the Sculpture Prize at the VI Youth Biennale in Paris, both in 1969. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale (1970, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1997) and prestigious international exhibitions such as the Sydney Biennale (1976), the Nagoya International Biennale (1991), and the São Paulo Biennale (1998). In 1988, he was an artist in residence at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.
His art is characterized by a total and engaging approach, combining scientific and philosophical elements, and the ability to transform space through light, creating works that challenge traditional dimensions. Notable exhibitions include "Lines of Artistic Research in Italy: 1960/1980," "Italian Art 1960-’82," "La otra escultura," "The Italian Metamorphosis," and "Italics. Italian Art Between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008."
