biography
Mario Schifano (Homs, 1934 – Rome, 1998) was one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century and is considered the leading exponent of Italian Pop Art. Born in Libya to a Sicilian family, Schifano moved to Rome shortly after World War II, where he began his artistic career thanks to his father’s work as an archaeologist and restorer. His artistic training developed rapidly, with his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Appia Antica in Rome in 1959, which launched him onto the national and international art scene.
Schifano is known for his extremely varied and innovative production: painter, filmmaker, musician, and pioneer of new techniques, he was among the first in Italy to use computers to create artworks, anticipating digital trends. His style is characterized by large monochrome canvases, the use of numbers, letters, and advertising symbols, and the blending of painting, music, cinema, and photography. Famous works such as "Coca Cola" and "Esso" reflect his passion for pop culture and modern life. His eccentric personality and glamorous lifestyle made him an iconic figure of the 1960s and 1970s, often compared to Andy Warhol. Schifano’s prolific output and the apparent simplicity of his works have led to the widespread circulation of forgeries, especially after his death. For this reason, the Mario Schifano Foundation was established to authenticate, catalog, and preserve his artistic legacy. Schifano also designed record covers and collaborated with artists and intellectuals of his time, leaving an indelible mark on the history of contemporary Italian art.
