biography
Marcello Avenali was an important Italian painter born in Rome in 1912, where he lived and worked until his death in 1981. His artistic career was mainly centered in the capital, which served as the hub for his long creative activity. Avenali is known for experimenting with various techniques and materials, ranging from figurative painting to abstraction, and for his participation in the Roman School, a significant artistic movement in 20th-century Italy. Among his most notable works are intense portraits such as that of his sister Anna from 1933, lyrical views like "Villa Borghese" from 1938, and transitional works towards abstraction such as "Angelina" from 1953. His production also includes frescoes, mosaics, stained glass, and tapestry cartoons, demonstrating remarkable technical versatility. In 2013, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale dedicated a tribute exhibition to Marcello Avenali, displaying works donated by the Marcello Avenali Archive, including paintings, tapestries, and sculptures that highlight the evolution of his artistic language. Avenali represents a prominent figure in 20th-century Italian art, able to combine tradition and innovation in a coherent and meaningful artistic journey.
