biography
Lucio Fontana was born on February 19, 1899, in Rosario, Argentina, to Italian parents. Raised in an artistic environment with a sculptor father and an actress mother, he moved to Italy as a child to study, attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Fontana began his career as a sculptor, working in his father's workshop and developing a strong interest in artistic experimentation. In 1947, he founded the Spatialism movement, which revolutionized contemporary art by introducing concepts of space and dimension into artworks. In the 1950s, he created his famous canvases with holes and later the iconic "cuts," works that broke with traditional painting and explored space beyond the surface. He participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and shows at the MoMA in New York. He died in Comabbio, near Varese, Italy, on September 7, 1968.
