biography
Joseph Kosuth is an American conceptual artist born on January 31, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio. He is considered one of the pioneers of conceptual art and language-based installations, which he began developing in the 1960s. His artistic training started at the Toledo Museum School of Design, where he studied from 1955 to 1962, followed by private studies with Belgian painter Line Bloom Draper. In 1963, he moved to the Cleveland Institute of Art on a scholarship, and after a year spent in Paris and traveling through Europe and North Africa, he settled in New York in 1965, attending the School of Visual Arts until 1967.
Kosuth is renowned for his linguistic installations and the use of texts, photographs, and colored lights, often with a strong philosophical and semiotic dimension. Among his most famous works is 'One and Three Chairs' (1965), which explores the relationship between object, image, and definition. His thinking has been deeply influenced by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, and his reflections on the separation between art and aesthetics have had a significant impact on contemporary art discourse. In 1969, he published the essay 'Art After Philosophy,' which became a reference point for conceptual art theory. He has taught and lectured at prestigious institutions, including the School of Visual Arts in New York, and has exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, participating in major events such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta.
Joseph Kosuth currently lives and works between New York and Rome, maintaining an active role as both an artist and educator. His career stands out for its continuous exploration of the relationship between art, language, and meaning, making him a central figure in the history of contemporary art.
