biography
Gino Piccioni, born in Foligno in 1873 and died in Biella in 1941, was an Italian painter and sculptor whose artistic career was mainly active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After receiving his artistic training in Rome under Achille Vertunni and Ettore Roesler Franz, Piccioni spent long periods in Germany, where he deepened his artistic research and developed a sensitive and refined style. His painting production, which mainly spans from 1899 to 1912, is characterized by landscape and portrait themes, often marked by delicate sentimentalism and evocative atmospheric renderings, especially in pastel works.
Piccioni participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Exhibition of 1899 with “L’Aniene presso Tivoli”, the Milan Triennale in 1900 with “Contadino del Lazio” and “Mattino grigio nell’oliveto”, and the Roman exhibition of the group “In Arte Libertas” in 1901, where he presented works such as “Giovinezza rigogliosa” and “Il sole tramonta”. In the following years, he also distinguished himself abroad, exhibiting in St. Petersburg and Rome with works like “Festa dell’anima” and “Mesti pensieri”. Around 1915, he approached sculpture, studying in the Roman studio of Ettore Ferrari and drawing closer to the symbolic tones of Leonardo Bistolfi. From the mid-1920s onwards, he devoted himself almost exclusively to sculpture, creating public and commemorative monuments in various Italian cities.
