biography
Fernandez Arman, born Armand Pierre Fernandez on November 17, 1928, in Nice and passed away on October 22, 2005, in New York, was a prominent French painter and sculptor in modern and contemporary art. He trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, where he met Yves Klein, and later at the École du Louvre in Paris. Arman began his career as a traditional painter in the 1950s but underwent a radical transformation by introducing accumulation techniques and using everyday objects as artistic material, becoming a leading figure of the Nouveau Réalisme movement.
His most famous works include "Accumulations," compositions of identical or similar objects piled together, and "Poubelles," transparent containers filled with trash and scraps, reflecting a poetic focus on reality and daily life. Arman is also known for his bronze sculptures and innovative use of broken musical instruments embedded in his canvases. His career was marked by continuous experimentation across painting, sculpture, and serigraphy, often signing his works with the pseudonym "Arman," which originated from a printing error that omitted the final 'd' of his surname.
Fernandez Arman's works have been exhibited internationally and are part of major museum collections.
