biography
Eugenio Carmi was one of the most important Italian painters of the 20th century, recognized as a leading figure in Italian abstraction. Born in Genoa in 1920, he was forced to move to Switzerland in 1938 due to racial persecutions, where he completed his studies, graduating in chemistry at the Federal Polytechnic of Zurich. After the war, he returned to Italy and settled in Milan from 1971, developing an international artistic career.
A pupil of Felice Casorati, Carmi began with figurative painting and then evolved towards informal art in the 1950s and 1960s, influenced by the industrial environment, especially through his collaboration with the steel industry Italsider, for which he managed the corporate image and created safety poster art. In later years, his work focused on rigorous geometric forms and material research, inspired by mathematical laws such as the golden ratio and the Pythagorean theorem.
Carmi was also an innovator in graphic design and applied arts, producing works on canvas, paper, iron, tin, and plastic, and participating in major events such as the 1966 Venice Biennale. His artistic production is included in numerous museum collections in Italy and abroad. He described himself as a "manufacturer of images," highlighting his creative and experimental approach.
