biography
Angelo Savelli was an Italian painter born in Pizzo Calabro in 1911. He was introduced to art at a young age through his uncle, the self-taught painter Alfonso Barone. After completing classical studies at the Liceo Filangieri in Vibo Valentia, he moved to Rome in 1930 to attend the art high school and later the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1936 under the mentorship of Ferruccio Ferrazzi. In the 1930s, he gained recognition by winning prestigious awards such as the "Mattia Preti" and "Balestra" prizes. In 1936, he frescoed the chapel of Villa Boimond in Sora and participated successfully in regional exhibitions.
During the 1940s, Savelli established his artistic career with solo exhibitions and participation in competitions like the Bergamo Prize, earning acclaim for his expressive style and innovative use of color. From 1947, he exhibited in major Italian galleries including the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan and the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice. His artistic research evolved towards monochrome abstraction, focusing on the color white, which became central to his work, exemplified by pieces such as "Bianco su bianco" (White on White) from 1956.
In 1964, he won the graphics prize at the Venice Biennale. Angelo Savelli passed away in 1995 in Dello, Brescia, leaving a significant legacy in the field of modern and contemporary Italian art.
