Edward C. Moore, prod. Tiffany & Co.

Important Tiffany & Co. silver table service, comprising a tureen and a pair of oval covered vegetable dishes, of plain oval form, each decorated with a Greek key border and raised on lion's paw feet. The covers are surmounted by sculptural finials in the form of a crowned leopard passant, derived from the Howland family coat of arms. Bearing the maker's marks "Tiffany & Co., 550 Broadway", the service is attributable to the production of the Tiffany & Co. workshops under the artistic direction of Edward C. Moore (1827–1891).
The finials reproduce the Howland family coat of arms, reflecting one of the most distinguished families of New York's social elite and among the most influential American mercantile dynasties of the nineteenth century, renowned for its international trading enterprise, Howland & Aspinwall.
Provenance: Commissioned by Gardiner Greene Howland Jr. and executed by Tiffany & Co. to a design by Edward C. Moore. Accompanied by historical documentation confirming the original commission and its descent within the Howland family.
