Valentin de Boulogne, coeval copy from

Coulommiers 3 january 1591- Rome 19 august 1632
"Concert of four musicians and a drinking man", oil on canvas, in a coeval giltwood frame. This painting was exposed in June 1946 in the Baltimore Museum of art during the exhibition "Musical instruments and their portrayal in art". It was published in march 1958 by Roberto Longhi "A propos de Valentin" for the French magazine "La revue des arts"; in "The Burlington Magazine", June 1960; by Benedict Nicolson "Caravaggism in Europe", v.1, 1990, p.204. The painting comes from the Francois Tronchin (1704-1798) collection, a Swiss lawyer who bought it from a man called Koester. There is also an engraving executed in 1786 by J. Couché: this engraving was believed by Brejon de Lavergnee and Cuzin as not referred to the original painting.
