China, Qing dynasty, late 18th/early 19th century

finely engraved and modelled as the Eight Immortals, standing on wooden bases.
The legend of the Eight Immortals arises in the twelfth century, during the Jin Dynasty. The well-known inseparable Eight Immortals (Baxian), were born from different disparate characters. Three of the Immortals are historical characters, while the others are purely legendary characters and created after popular imagination. Their group symbolizes happiness according to the Taoist principles, as the main objective of Taoism is the pursuit of immortality and longevity.
