A Chinese porcelain set for rice (48)

Dynasty Qing, Guangxu period
polychromatic decorated with the Chinese dragon "Long" and the Chinese phoenix "Fenghuang", flanked by clouds and bats, the interior of the rim is decorated with floral ornaments and the set is composed of 12 plates with a diameter of 18,5 cm., 12 bowls with plate and cover with a height of 6 cm. All pieces marked with the six character calligraphy mark. In perfect conditions, one plate with a minor defect on the rim. In the Chinese culture the dragon and the phoenix stand for the female and the male part and over the years they have become also the symbols for the Emperor and the Empress, which together represent the perfection of a couple, the perfect union of two different but complementary poles. There is also a Chinese saying which refers to the dragon as male and to the phoenix as female: "The Dragon's splendor and beauty of the Phoenix".
