A rare French ivory group

the ivory is finely decorated and modelled as Saint George sitting on his horse and fighting against the dragon. The whole group is standing on an ebonized wooden base. The iconography of Saint George is traditionally connected with this, the most famous episode of his life the killing of the dragon, like written in the Legenda Aurea of Jacopo da Varagine.
