biography
Vedovamazzei is the artistic name of the duo formed by Stella Scala (Naples, 1964) and Simeone Crispino (Frattaminore, 1962), active since 1991. Although the name references Milan, both artists are originally from Southern Italy and began collaborating after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. The name Vedovamazzei originated from a linguistic coincidence related to a street sign, becoming a symbol of a collective identity that transcends the individuality of its members. Their work is characterized by a typically Neapolitan irony, continuous experimentation, and a multidisciplinary approach that ranges from painting to sculpture, installation, and photography. Vedovamazzei’s artworks explore universal themes such as life, death, transience, and defeat, often through an appealing aesthetic that conceals profound and reflective content. The duo has exhibited in major public and private venues in Italy and abroad, and their works are part of the permanent collections of museums such as MAXXI in Rome, Madre in Naples, and MAMbo in Bologna. Despite their personal separation, Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino continue to collaborate closely, producing a body of over 900 works that testify to a constant and original artistic research, difficult to categorize within a single movement or trend.
