Giuseppe Bergomi

Giuseppe Bergomi, born in Brescia in 1953, is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary figurative sculpture in Italy. After graduating in painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, he began his artistic career as a hyperrealist painter before dedicating himself exclusively to sculpture from 1981 onwards. His work ranges from polychrome terracotta to bronze castings, with pieces that evoke ancient sculptural traditions, particularly Etruscan, as seen in emblematic works such as "Bagnante addormentata" and "Grande nudo di adolescente" from 1991. Bergomi has exhibited in prestigious contemporary art venues both in Italy and internationally, establishing his global reputation.
In 2024, the city of Brescia honored Bergomi with a widespread retrospective titled "Sculptures 1982 / 2024," held across the cloisters of San Salvatore and Santa Maria in Solario at the Museo di Santa Giulia and the Grande Miglio rooms in the Castle. Curated by the Fondazione Brescia Musei, the exhibition features terracotta and bronze works spanning his entire career, including the previously unseen "Colazione a letto" (2024), which pays tribute to three generations of his family. This event highlights Bergomi's deep connection to his hometown and his ability to depict everyday life and profound themes through sculpture.
His art is characterized by an intricate interplay between personal life and universal dimensions, exploring themes such as love, family, and friendship. Bergomi is recognized for his technical skill and sensitivity in interpreting the human figure, confirming his status as a prominent figure in the Italian contemporary art scene.
