biography
Franco Gentilini was a prominent Italian painter born on August 4, 1909, in Faenza. After completing elementary school, he began his artistic training as an apprentice in a woodworking and carving workshop. Between 1921 and 1925, he attended evening courses in industrial design and sculpture at the municipal school «Tommaso Minardi». Under the mentorship of painter Giovanni Romagnoli, he developed his painting skills. In 1930, he traveled to Paris, which had a significant influence on his art, and the same year he exhibited a painting at the 17th Venice Biennale. In 1932, he moved permanently to Rome, where he became part of the literary circle at Caffè Aragno, collaborating with artists and writers such as Cagli, Mucci, Falqui, Sinisgalli, and de Libero, illustrating their texts and poems. Gentilini also distinguished himself as a set and costume designer, illustrator, and publicist. In 1965, he won the prestigious Rome Prize. His painting style is marked by keen observation of reality, an ironic vein, and a dreamy pathos, influenced by tonalism, cubism, and surrealism, especially after a 1947 stay in Paris. His notable works include urban views of Rome and its suburbs, where altered proportions create dreamlike and estranged atmospheres. Gentilini also taught painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He passed away in Rome in 1981.
