Alessandro Twombly

Alessandro Twombly, born in Rome in December 1959, is a contemporary Italian artist renowned for his paintings and sculptures. The son of the celebrated American painter Cy Twombly and Italian artist and photographer Tatiana Franchetti, Alessandro grew up in an environment deeply connected to the arts, developing a unique creative sensibility from an early age. After studying Modern History at the London School of Economics, he moved to New York, where he worked as a studio assistant for Sandro Chia and furthered his artistic training at the New York Studio School. His exhibition debut took place in 1986 in Rome at the Bonomo Gallery, marking the beginning of an international career that has seen him exhibit in galleries and museums in New York, Rome, Berlin, Basel, London, Brussels, Geneva, Cologne, Buenos Aires, Helsinki, and Milan. Alessandro Twombly lives and works in the hills of Lazio, northeast of Rome, in a natural setting that profoundly influences his artistic research. Nature, flora, fauna, and the surrounding landscape are constant sources of inspiration, as he himself states: “I work with nature like another artist might focus on the nude.” His painting is distinguished by the use of vibrant colors, applied with energetic and gestural brushstrokes, often allowing pigments to overlap without blending, creating lively chromatic contrasts. In sculpture, Twombly seeks the essence of matter, shaping forms that evoke the inner strength of nature. Among his most recent solo exhibitions are his participation at the Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection in Locarno in 2023 and the anticipated solo show at Amanita Gallery in New York in 2024, twenty years after his last exhibition in the American city.
